چکیده

Improvements in diesel engine aftertreatment technology are needed to meet future environmental quality goals. Systems using recently developed compact plasmatron fuel converters in conjunction with aftertreatment catalysts could provide new opportunities for obtaining significant pollution reductions. Use of compact plasmatron reformers to produce hydrogen-rich gas for the regeneration of NOx absorber/adsorbers and particulate traps could provide significant advantages. Catalyst requirements are determined and overall system characteristics are evaluated. The options made possible by the use of the on-board hydrogen generation for the regeneration of catalysts are briefly described.

PSFC/JA-02-30 Onboard Plasmatron Generation of Hydrogen Rich Gas for Diesel Engine Exhaust Aftertreatment and Other Applications

Diesel plasmatron reformer technology can provide substantial throughputs without the need of using a catalyst The use of the special plasma facilitates robust noncatalytic conversion of diesel fuel into hydrogen rich gas with hydrogen yields that could be sufficient for NOx trap regeneration applications. Higher yields can be obtained with the use of a catalyst. Plasmatron reformers could also...

Hydrogen Generation from Plasmatron Reformers: a Promising Technology for Nox Adsorber Regeneration and Other Automotive Applications

Plasmatron reformers are being developed at MIT and ArvinMeritor [1]. In these reformers a special low power electrical discharge is used to promote partial oxidation conversion of hydrocarbon fuels into hydrogen and CO. The partial oxidation reaction of this very fuel rich mixture is difficult to initiate. The plasmatron provides continuous enhanced volume initiation. To minimize electrode ero...

Reduction of emissions and fuel consumption of diesel engine by using common rail fuel injection and aftertreatment systems

In this experimental study, the fuel system of the OM364 diesel engine manufactured by IDEM company, which operates in the basic mode with inline fuel pump and mechanical governor control, is upgraded to a common rail system with electronic control by the ECU. Also, emmssion of exhaust gases is reduced by SCR and DOC catalysts then performance and emmission parameters of engine are compared i...
